Is affiliate marketing legit?

Is affiliate marketing legit? This question comes up all the time, primarily because people can’t wrap their heads around it. This is my opinion, having done this for years, and I want to share some of my observations surrounding affiliate marketing or any work from home business model.

1. You are working on your own. You have no one to report to. This leads to people treating this like a hobby. “I’ll do it when it fits into my schedule.” Versus you, putting it into your schedule and everything else works around it.

2. Minimal investment. Doesn’t take much to get started. Hence, the problem. In many cases people are looking for everything for Free. Which is a 2-edged sword. Usually, free means not having all the necessary tools you need to come across professionally, affecting your results. For example, not wanting to spend money on an autoresponder, upgrading the theme on their blog, etc.

3. Not investing in themselves. They don’t grow with their business. Usually the mentality is, “I can do this myself, why would I need to listen to anyone.” Partly true, but how long do you want the process to take when the path has already been paved.

4. Looking for quick results. If you watch and read social media posts, the impression you get is that this is something easy. You can copy and paste your way to making a 6-figure income, within weeks if not days. After a while, people realize there is more to this than they signed up for, leading to frustration. Without the strong reason for why you are doing this. It doesn’t take much for someone to throw in the towel.

5. Lack of regulations. Because we are in a creator economy, it is difficult to separate fact from fiction because you can post pretty much anything you want. So, it becomes difficult to know who to trust.

Can you do this? Yes, you can. But be prepared to treat this like the profession it is and not some quick money scheme.
